Conceived by Yolonda Brinkley of YRB International Exposure during her first trip to the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in May 2009, Beyond Borders seeks to strengthen the cross cultural network of the various ethnic groups represented at the Cannes Film Festival.   The objective is to enlarge the multticultural networking territory in order to change our status from mere festival attendees to power players in the international film industry.  The time is now to think outside the box and beyond the borders. 

THE PANELISTS.....

FELIPE BRAGANCA is a distinguished member of the new-new generation of Brazilian filmmakers. The 29 year old began his career at the turn of the 21st century and has been busy making movies since. He's directed three award-winning shorts and an experimental digital feature-THE ESCAPE OF THE MONKEY WOMAN. As a screenwriter and assistant director, he's worked with Karim Ainouz since 2005 on films and a TV series. He's currently collaborating as a screenwriter with some of the Brazilian New Wave directors and is excited about A Alegria's/The Joy's debut at the 63rd Festival de Cannes- Quinzaine des Realisateurs/Director's Fortnight!

MICHAEL ROWE is an Australian-born screenwriter and director. He has lived for 21 years in Australia, one year in Guatemala, and 16 years in Mexico. He has a B.A in English Literature from La Trobe Univesity (Australia) and a Diploma in Screenwriting from the Mexican National Arts Center. He has written plays and short stories in both English and Spanish. He has written three feature scripts in Spanish and one in English. Año Bisiesto is his directorial debut has been selected to screen in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs section of the 63rd Festival de Cannes in Cannes, France. 

Among the various sections at the Cannes Film Festival, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs/ Directors' Fortnight was created by the French Directors Guild in 1969 to aid filmmakers and contribute to their discovery. Since its inception it has served as a breeding ground where the Cannes Festival regularly finds its prestigious auteurs. 

The Directors' Fortnight has showcased the first films of Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Nagisa Oshima, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Ken Loach, Jim Jarmusch, Michael Haneke, Chantal Akerman, Spike Lee, Luc et Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Sofia Coppola, … invité Robert Bresson, Manoel de Oliveira, Stephen Frears, Jerzy Skolimowski, William Friedkin, Francis Ford Coppola... among others.

Tracy Rector (Seminole) attended Antioch University’s First Peoples Program 
for her Masters in Education. She specializes in Native American approaches to 
learning and documentary film, in addition Tracy is a student of traditional plant 
medicine. As a Native Education specialist, Tracy offers unique insight to her 
projects. Her vision is to bring traditional and contemporary education together 
on a foundation based in environmental stewardship. 

As the co-producer of the award-winning films Teachings of the Tree People, 
March Point and numerous short videos including Bunky Echo-Hawk: A 
proACTIVE ARTist, Tracy has developed an awareness and sensitivity to the 
power of media and film as a modern storytelling tool. Her work has been 
featured at National Geographic’ All Roads Film Project, the Smithsonian’s 
Museum of the American Indian and on the PBS series Independent Lens. She 
has also been recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Native American 
Public Telecommunications Producers grant and the Horace Mann Award. 

In addition, Tracy has worked on such projects as the Seattle Art Museum’s 
international exhibition S’abadeb-The Gifts: Pacific Coast Salish Art and Artists 
and to the development of curriculum for IslandWood, an environmental 
education center. She is the Co-founder and Executive Director of Longhouse 
Media and a proud mother of two boys.
